This story comes to us from ShaVon McConnell:

The Prince George's County Board of Education, along with the Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS), will announce the 2011 Prince George's County Teacher of the Year at its annual reception on Wednesday, April 27. The selected candidate out of twenty nominees, will go on to compete with representatives from all other jurisdictions in the State of Maryland for the prestigious Maryland Teacher of the Year Award.

The event will feature remarks from Board of Education Chair Verjeana M. Jacobs, Esq. and Superintendent of Schools William R. Hite, as well as the 2010 Prince George's County Teacher of the Year, Tiffany Doster. The keynote address will be delivered by Artis Hampshire-Cowan, Senior Vice President and Secretary at Howard University.  The winner of the student essay contest will read his winning entry entitled, “My Most Inspirational Teacher.” Reception attendees will be entertained by student performers in the Jazz Ensemble from Charles H. Flowers High School.

Organized by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), the Maryland Teacher of the Year Program recognizes the work being done by the state’s outstanding teachers. Drawing from a pool of nominees representing each county, one individual teacher is selected for the honor of representing Maryland in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

The Prince George’s County Teacher of the Year (PGCTOTY) represents the county as its most outstanding educator for one year. The PGCTOTY is invited to attend and speak at special school system events, and acts as an ambassador for PGCPS. This year’s nominees included representatives from every school level, including elementary, middle and high schools.
