County Executive Announces New Initiative: Read Across Prince George’s

The following information was sent to us by Prince George's County Schools:

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III announced a new education initiative, “Read Across Prince George’s,” which will further promote literacy from pre-school to adulthood throughout the County.

Every March, the National Education Association kicks off Read Across America to promote reading, pay tribute and celebrate the birth date of the beloved Dr. Seuss.  Read Across Prince George's is an extension of the National and State of Maryland programs. However, the scope of the County's program will be a year round promotion with on-going activities and partnerships unique to Prince George’s County.  The key partners will be the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, Prince George’s County Public School System, Bowie Baysox and Six Flags America.

Throughout the month of March, the County Executive will participate in various literacy activities in the County, ranging from on-going school visits, public library readings and discussions to hosting a Read Across Prince George's Round Table.

“I am very excited to get this new initiative underway. Coming soon will be a “Baker’s Book List,” stated Baker.  “We have alsoteamed-up with the Bowie Baysox Baseball franchise through their literacy program.  They have generously agreed to donate up to 50,000 baseball tickets, as reading incentives for the school based program that will be launched. This is a shining example of the County working hand-in-hand with the business community, to make a difference in our academic and community environments.”
