Bowie man stole $350K in car loan scheme

BOWIE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Bowie man stole more than $350,000 in a car loan scheme from June 2010 to August 2012.

Duane Akuffo, 28, applied for car loans at various credit unions with an array of fake documents. He forged fake pay stubs, information about applicants and he even lied about the type of car he was buying each time, calling it a 'luxury car,' the court documents stated.

Once Akuffo was approved for the loans, he would take the money as share it with nine others who helped him and default on the loans.

"Relying on the materially false representations, the credit unions issued loans totaling $357,356 to the applicants," officials said in a news release.

Former Metro Access driver guilty of sexual assault

BOWIE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A former Metro Access driver accused of sexually assaulting a passenger in April 2013 was found guilty on Friday.

Ezra Porter faces a maximum sentence of 20 years for the incident. He was found guilty of a 2nd degree sex offense.

On April 19, Porter was driving a female passenger home from her job when he pulled over and threatened to harm her if she didn't take off her pants, according to officials. Fearing for her life, the victim removed her pants and Porter sexually assaulted her.

Porter drove the woman home and reported the assault to police.

During the trial, the state was able to corroborate the victim's story by using the GPS on the Metro Access vehicle. It showed the deviation from the normal route and that the vehicle was stopped for the approximately four minutes the victim claimed.

Sentencing is set for September 5, 2014.
