Police ID Man killed, woman injured in Bowie ATV accident

BOWIE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Park Police have identified the man who was killed and the woman who was seriously injured in an ATV accident in Bowie early Monday morning.

The man has been identified as 23-year-old Brandon Barnes of Lanham, Maryland National Capital Park Police said. Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The woman has been identified at 25-year-old DeAndra Jones of Lanham, according to police. Jones was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore in critical condition, police said.

The accident happened around 2:00 a.m. at the underpass in the 8600 block of Racetrack Road in Bowie, Md., officials said.

The trail involved prohibits the use of ATVs and other motorized vehicles, officials said. The victims were not supposed to be in the park at the time of the accident because it was closed. It is not clear at this time who was driving the ATV and whether drugs or alcohol may have been factors in the accident, according to authorities. Police believe the ATV was traveling at high speeds and the driver lost control.

The ATV involved is described as a gray, black and white Yamaha. Police are asking the public to contact them if they know of anyone who may own an ATV like the one described.


Prince George's County Police and Maryland Capital Park Police are investigating the accident together.
