Kayakers rescued from Patuxent River

BOWIE, Md. (WUSA9) --
"The 911 call was received for a kayaker in distress in the Patuxent River and frankly that's all we knew," says Chief Marc Bashoor, with the Prince George's County Fire Department.

Finding the kayakers was the first task rescuers faced. A man and woman had gone into the Patuxent River off Queen Anne Road, but had drifted about five miles upstream.

"The female tipped out of the kayak was able to get back in, then was pinned against a tree at some point," says Bashoor. The man was still in the kayak at that time, but the conditions of the water were not in their favor.

"It's cold water, even though it's 80 degrees outside that water is still cold. There is a section of the channel in this river that is very swift and if they get into that they can get swept down, and if there is debris they can get smacked up against one of those trees, you go under and don't come back up," says Bashoor.

Helicopters and boats searched the area, but had no luck. A big concern for everyone as crews tried to find the couple, who at this point, had been stranded for an hour.

Thankfully the kayakers had a cell phone and crews were able to pinpoint their location using the cell tower and finally get them out of the water.

Crews found them several miles away, the woman safely in the boat but the man following along in the kayak, until he became exhausted and he too, had to be rescued.

The kayakers refused treatment. "Both were in good health and frankly in good spirits, they were very tired and ready to go home," says Bashoor.

In all, a two hour ordeal, everyone was thankful it ended the way it did.

Rescue crews suggest kayakers only use designated areas for getting into the water and most importantly, they say, know the area.

"It really gives new appreciation for understanding your surroundings and being able to articulate that," says Bashoor.
