Bodega Spanish Tapas & Lounge and Thunder Burger to Support Pink Jams! | Health
According to BreastCancer.org, roughly 1 out of every 8 women in America will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that, annually, over 200,000 women are diagnosed with the disease in this country, and approximately 40,000 die from it. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Bodega Spanish Tapas & Lounge, and Thunder Burger & Bar will be teaming up to help the cause by participating in the Pink Jams! “Take a Bite Out of Breast Cancer” annual awareness program.
“We are happy to be able to participate in this yearly awareness program, and to help out this great charity,” says Ryan Fichter, Executive Chef at both the Bodega Spanish Tapas & Lounge and Thunder Burger & Bar. “It’s a serious disease, and we can all benefit by helping to bring it to an end.”
The “Take a Bite Out of Breast Cancer” is put on each year by Pink Jams!, a Washington D.C.-based non-profit that promotes early detection and breast cancer awareness. Throughout the month, participating restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to the charity, to support their outreach efforts in reaching men and women under the age of 40 to raise awareness about breast cancer risks.
When diners visit Thunder Burger & Bar on October 2, 2012, and Bodega Spanish Tapas & Lounge on October 3, 2012, the restaurant will donate 25 percent of all the proceeds from food and beverages that day to support Pink Jams!.
“We are so happy to have Bodega Spanish Tapas and Lounge and Thunder Burger and Bar participating in our annual awareness program,” said Christa Floresca, founder of Pink Jams!. “Each October, we reach thousands of area diners - and we could not do it without the support of this great community. It¹s an important step for raising breast cancer awareness among men and women under 40.”
Breast cancer risk factors include environmental, lifestyle, and genetics, although 85 percent of cases occur in women who have no family history of the disease. The CDC reports that addressing some common risk factors can help to lower chances of developing breast cancer. These include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and not drinking more than one alcoholic drink per day. Additionally, BreastCancer.org recommends avoiding BPA (a chemical found in many plastics), removing the skin and fat from meats, and eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
“Together, we can try to beat this disease,” added Fichter. “Stop in, dine, and feel good about knowing that you are helping to support a great cause, while getting to dine on some wonderful food.”
