Scripps National Spelling B-E-E

Prior to The E.W. Scripps Spelling Bee Wednesday, June 1st at the National Harbor, 275 contestants took a written test that counted toward each speller's preliminary score. There were 138 boys and 137 girls who ranged in age from 8 to 15 from all over the world.

“This year at the Scripps National Spelling Bee we have 275 students competing and they come from all over the world. It’s not just a United States event but we draw spellers from Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea,” said  E.W. Scripps Communication’s Manager Lee Rose

Round 3 at the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee

Things are heating up at The National Harbor as 275 students; ages 8-15 compete against each other at the Scripps National Spelling Bee at the Gaylord National Resort. Virginia, DC, and Maryland are represented as we advance to the last group in Round 3.

Round 2 went quite swiftly except for when 14-year-old Marcus Tecarro of Loves Park, Ill., was stumped by the word “ineluctable,” an adjective that means something that’s not to be avoided or escaped. Marcus spelled the word correctly, but was not as lucky in Round 3 when he misspelled the widely used prescription drug, Penicillin.

Potomac, Maryland's 13-year-old, Susana Yau, has represented her state very well today spelling noun's "pierrot" and "bombardier" correctly. Additionally, Howard University Middle School's Donovan Jordan has spelled both "schadenfreude" and "decorticate" accurately to keep D.C. in the game.

Prince George's County Public Schools Reward Students

Prince George's County Public Schools will reward 20 honor roll students with an awards program on Wednesday, June 1st at The Mall at Prince Georges. The Scholar Dollar Program was created in 2006 through a joint effort of Prince George’s County Government Office of the County Executive and Prince George’s County Public Schools to reward students for academic excellence.

Throughout every school year, the program provides awards and special discounts and incentives to students who earn a 3.0 GPA, Honor Roll, or other significant achievement status at each report card period. To date, almost 900,000 PGCPS students have been rewarded through the Scholar Dollar program. At the end of each school year a number of students are honored with gift cards and airline tickets during an awards ceremony.
