Prince George's County Police Officer Nearly Shot by Robbery Suspect During Struggle for Gun

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team is investigating a police involved shooting in which a Prince George’s County police officer traded gunshots with a suspected robber while the two stood just feet away from each other.

Thursday evening at approximately 8:07 p.m., patrol officers responded to a report of a citizen armed robbery near the 1700 block of Countrywood Court in Landover, Maryland.  An area canvass was conducted and a robbery detective located a suspect matching the description near Cedarwood Court and Sheriff Road.

As the detective conducted a pat down of the suspect to check for weapons, a struggle ensued between the two for the suspect’s gun.  The detective and suspect then both fired their weapons at each other at very close range.  The suspect was struck multiple times, but the officer was not hit.  The suspect then fled on foot, still carrying his gun, and was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit by assisting officers who had to wrestle the suspect’s gun from his possession.  A loaded Taurus PT908 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number was recovered from the suspect.

The suspect, identified as Cory Dallante Joyner, 18 years old, of the 1700 block of Belle Haven Drive, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The Prince George’s County Police Officer involved has been identified as Corporal Thomas Harley, a seven year veteran assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.  He has been placed on administrative leave as a result of this incident.

Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team at (301) 856-2660.
