Magic Technology Upgrade

BLADENSBURG--Residents of Bladensburg's Autumn Woods apartment community have new technology to help them with homework, tutoring and even professional training.

All it took was a little bit of Magic.

NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson brought a technology upgrade Sept. 30 to Autumn Woods' Magic Johnson Foundation Community Empowerment Center. The Autumn Woods center, first opened in 1999, is one of 18 community empowerment centers across the country funded by the Magic Johnson Foundation. The center offers free classes ranging from basic math tutoring for younger students to resume writing and financial training for adults.

The upgrade was provided in partnership with Best Buy, whose technical support division, Geek Squad, supervised the installation.

Obama Stumps For Democrats In Prince George's

BOWIE, Md. (WUSA) -- President Obama: asset or liability for Democratic candidates?

In Maryland, the answer for nearly every politician seems to be "big time asset."

The President spent the afternoon stumping for Governor O'Malley and all but one member of the state Democratic slate at Bowie State University.

There are a lot of Democrats around the country who are holding the President at arm's length, worried his sagging poll numbers will drag them down. But not in Maryland.

The latest poll suggests Governor Martin O'Malley is 11 points ahead in his rematch with former Governor Bob Ehrlich. The rally at Bowie State was designed to convince hard-core Democrats that even if they seem to be ahead, they still need to get out and vote on November 2.

Prince George's County Executives Clear Officers of any Cheating

LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA) -- The Prince George's County executive, along with the county's chief of police, have cleared all of their officers from any cheating or wrong doing.

In a news conference at the Prince George's County Police headquarters, county officials said that "no officer is guilty of cheating."

They said the similar test scores can be attributed to a "lazy instructor," coupled with inaccurate media reporting.

Police Chief Roberto Hylton said police and county officials will continue their investigation.

Prosecutions May Be Jeopardized By Police Academy Questions

LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA) -- Fallout from an alleged cheating scandal at the Prince George's County Police Academy could include cases against some accused criminals being dropped, according to State's Attorney Glenn Ivey.

"We'll made decisions on a case-by-case basis on where there may be problems and what information we may have to disclose to the defense bar," Ivey said.

Ivey has asked for and audit from the Police Department in the wake of an internal investigation at the police academy.

Police Chief Roberto Hylton says he is investigating whether dozens of cadets cheated on police academy tests.

The probe includes 146 officers from three classes since July 2009. At least 34 officers are facing specific cheating allegations.

Department records show cadets had perfect scores on at least 11 tests measuring basic skills, arrest procedures and how to testify in court. That raised suspicions among some officials.

President Obama To Rally Today For O'Malley

BOWIE, Md. (AP) -- President Barack Obama will be in Maryland to campaign for Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley.

Obama will speak at Bowie State University on Thursday.

O'Malley has said the event will focus on a better jobs future that Democrats are working toward.

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown also is scheduled to join the event.
